Instructional Technology

Junction Elementary School Instructional Technology class's primary purpose is to prepare our students for success in a technological society. To create a foundation for this success we have adopted a state curriculum in compliance with  Chapter 126. Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Technology and Texas Technology Application Standards
One part of JES Technology curriculum is from the SRA TechKnowledge. Please click on the logo below and check out the informative site. TechKnowledge curriculum meets the goals of education technology and the No Child Left Behind legislation of 2001.

Quoting a quote taken from the teacher's manual of TechKnowledge sums it all up:

"Technology must enhance learning.
It's not enough simply to have a computer and an Internet connection in
the classroom if they are not part of the learning process.
Technology is a tool like any other, and the value does not come from
having access to it, but rather how it is used."

Another part of the curriculum is from SpeedSkin’s  TypingMaster Keyboarding Program. Please click on the logo below and check out the informative site:

A good resource that all students can use to practice and enhance their keyboarding skills can be found online at  Free Touch Typing Program.

 MissionStatement

A solid foundation is paramount to cement a strong structure to withstand the elements for the life of the structure. This foundation starts at the beginning of constructing a structure. I too feel it is paramount to build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills at the beginning of a child’s education. This educational foundation will last a lifetime. My mission as a teacher is to establish an educational foundation by simply assisting students where I place emphases on active learning. Active learning to me means students actually perform those learned skills. Students should be their own active creators of knowledge, by observing, manipulating, and interpreting the world around them.
I believe good teachers provide students with knowledge to grow intellectually. This knowledge has power, power that brings enrichment and creativity into our daily lives. I want students to know that their education is in essence, consequential in all of life's endeavors. My mission is to be the pivotal teacher that spurs excellence in all those life's endeavors.

This is my mission for the students at Junction Elementary School.

Learning in a multimedia lesson is often a forerunner to applying or using that knowledge in the real world.  Transfer of learning (Broad & Newstrom, et al).

We have procedures which mean we take a series of steps to accomplish an end. Manual procedures are human tasks. A particular course of action intended to achieve favorable results.  Our procedures will be based on positive attitudes, academic excellence, cooperative effort, and a safe, supportive environment for all. These procedures become a standard when we all practice a common good that is acceptable and appreciable for each student in this classroom. This standard procedure becomes a life skill.

 Entering the Classroom

When you enter the classroom you do so with a positive attitude and a readiness to work. Coming in an orderly manner that means we walk in locate our binders located in the bookshelf wit your teacher's class name, and stand in front of our computers until the teacher gives the direction to sit and listen for instructions.
Students are to sit quietly and wait for instructions for the day's assignment. This means that you do not play with the mouse or the keyboard. These computers are machines that assist us in our classroom learning. Each computer assist an average of 12-16 students each week.  They are to be treated with respect and handling and treatment of school equipment, accordingly to our district policy for technology equipment.

  Leaving the Classroom
At the end of the classroom period you will be instructed to exit all computer programs.  This will be done in an orderly manner which means, except those instructed, will have to exit the computer programs you are in; and the monitor shows the desktop, and when headphones are used, they will be placed on the hooks provided, or upon top of the CPU.  Chairs will be be neatly shoved in, and the keyboard and mouse squared neatly on the table. You will line up in my order and exit the classroom.

 Classroom Expectations

Classroom Expectations is how you are expected to act in my classroom. The TechLab Expectations are posted in the front of the room. However, they are also listed here for you to see with comments.

  1. Listen when others are talking. (Especially when the teacher is giving instructions; so we all can understand the instructions.)
  2. Follow directions. (Very Important)
  3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. (This especially means that you do not move other students' mouse or play with their keyboards, or related equipment that is not yours.)
  4. Work quietly and do not disturb others. (Our curriculum requires all of us to be silent)
  5. Show respect for school and personal property. (Do not harm the computer equipment in this classroom.)
  6. Work and play in a safe manner. (Play in this classroom means we get free time to play computer games)

 Computer Rules

These rules are designed to inform the students of what their expectation and behavior is to be when they are using the computer.  It is also designed with Internet safety guide lines. It  acknowledges the consequences if these rules are violated or ignored.

When You Need Help or Asking A Question
You should always feel comfortable enough in this classroom  to ask me for help or no matter how many questions you feel you need to ask so you do understand what we are learning or doing. However, there is a correct way (procedure) in doing so.

FIRST, If I am explaining or instructing on how to accomplish the assignment please keep your hand down until I have finished.  I may give your answer during our discussion.  Try, try it yourself, then raise your hand and I will help.
SECOND, please do not yell out an answer.  I want everyone to think first.  If I have not already picked out a certain student to answer, then  raise your hand and I may call on you for the answer.
THIRD, I may ask you questions so I can check to see what you have learned, to keep you involved with the lessons, and help you to understand what you applying to your own thinking.

~Before you say what you think... THINK~

Further explanation for the Typing Master Grading Key for 3rd through 5th Grade is below:

Typing Master Grading Key and Instructions
1.
The TARGET level of achievement for each “end of” Grade level” at Junction Elementary School will be:
!  Grade 3: 15 Words per Minute at 90-100% accuracy
!  Grade 4: 20 Words per Minute at 90-100% accuracy
!  Grade 5: 25 Words per Minute at 90-100% accuracy

2.      To achieve “Touch Typing” you must learn and/or memorize where the letter/number keys are on the keyboard. You must learn by either practicing/memorizing on a keyboard and/or a picture of a keyboard.

3.      LESSON EXERCISES ~ Students have the ability to reach their typing speed by taking their time on the Exercise Lessons learning where the fingers are to be positioned. Students are required to meet the at least half of the minimum goal level per grade level set for each six weeks.  Exercises can be redone until the student become successful, however all exercises will be completed before going back and retaking any Exercises.

Note: AG-Above assigned Goal
   BG-Below assigned Goal

4.      Test must be at or above goal level set for the six week period.  Any test not meeting goal levels will be at an adjusted grade. Words Per Minute (WPM) must be met. If WPM is met than the grade will be what you have attained when the lesson ends at the end of the class period.
For example: if the goal level is 15WPM and you receive 15WPM/85% the grade will be 85; if you receive a 14WPM/90% the formula is 14 divided by 15 giving you a 93% level of success multiplied by 90 giving you a grade of 93% X 90=83.9 which equals to a grade of 84. At the same time if you get a 90% at 17WPM the grade will be adjusted by dividing 17 into 15 with a 113% above goal multiplied by 90=101 grade. GradeSpeed’s highest grade given is a 100. So, it is better to do better than Goal!!

Note: AG-Above assigned Goal
   BG-Below assigned Goal

5.       Grades will be taken from Accuracy and Net Speed columns when the Complete Report is printed out at the end of the class day for keyboarding assignments. Exercise grades include, but not limited to, Keys; Words; Sentences; Paragraphs. (Games and Reviews do not give grades).

6.      Each Grade Level will be given an adjusted Goal Level for each six week period so an “end of Grade level goal” can be met.

          1st Six Weeks Goal
Grade 3: 8 Words per Minute at 90-100% accuracy

Grade 4: 10 Words per Minute at 90-100% accuracy

        2nd Six Weeks Goal
