2007-2008 Board Goals

TheJunction ISD Board of Trustees developed and adopted the following goals to support the district mission.  The list represents short and long-term priorities for the district from the board’s and individual campuses’ point of view.  The board uses these goals to guide its decision making and evaluating the superintendent’s job performance.

Goal#1  Facilities

* Continue improvements on facilities to include cafeteria, high school, middle school gym dressing rooms, and maintenance/bus barn.

* Continually evaluate facilities for the process of developing long-range goals.

 High School:

a.     The top and bottom floors will be painted to update the building which in turn will create a warmer and friendlier environment.

b.    New lighting will be installed in the entry hall, principal office and library.

c.     The old library is being turned into a modern science lab.  New tables and equipment has been ordered for the science lab.

d.    The stairs have been painted and rubber slip guards will be placed on the steps to prevent slipping or falling down wet stairs.

e.     The building will be kept clean at all times.

f.      Outside lighting has been replaced for security.

 Middle School:

Long term goals for JMS would be to improve the overall appearance of the school to stimulate student academics and make JMS inviting and comfortable to anyone who walks through the door.

Elementary:

1.    Covered walkways from kindergarten building to main building and from front walkway to cafeteria with future extension to little gym.

2.    Complete paving of parking areas and improve drainage on roadway between main parking lot and front entrance.

Goal#2  Morale and Pride

Create a Positive District Climate for Students and Staff

 A.    Students:

* Make schools personal—Build relationships

* Provide each student with an adult advocate.

* Develop an incentives program: reward what you want.

* Reduce student office referrals.

High School:

a.     Teachers have been given a popcorn popper in the lounge for daily use.

b.    A coffee pot was placed in the teacher’s lounge.

c.     A suggestion box is in the teacher’s lounge so they may address concerns or needs.

d.    Teacher and student birthdays are announced on a daily basis.

e.     Birthday cakes will be provided for teachers at the end of each month.

f.      Students are rewarded for great performances with extended lunches.

g.    A floating Eagle Head trophy is displayed by winning campuses or grade levels to promote spirit and pride.

h.    Teachers are asked to greet students at the classroom door with a smile, handshake or pat on the back.

i.      Constant visibility by the principal will reduce student misbehaviors.

j.      Operation Campus Pride will be in place to keep the outside of the campus clean.

Middle School:

JMS is committed to an advisory program that will provide each student with an adult advocate.

JMS will continue to build pride and community morale with incentive programs and rewards for students and staff.

 Elementary:

Rewards for meeting reading goals, math goals, perfect attendance, and honor roll.  All students learning school song during PE class and high school athletes leading song on Friday mornings.

B.     Teachers:

* Develop a shared vision through shared leadership, decision making, and problem solving.

High School:

a.     The CIC has new members and will meet once a month to discuss campus issues and ensure site based decision making.

b.    Principal is responsible for promoting a positive learning environment and creating an environment that supports positive student behavior and eliminates negative student behavior.

c.     Teachers will be given those resources needed to effectively teach all of their students.

d.    Technology issues will be corrected as soon as possible.

Elementary:

Social committee creating opportunities for team building and building personal relationships.  Lunch duty for teachers is minimal to allow for teachers to eat together.

Goal#3  Academics

A.  Curriculum:

* Work with staff to implement curriculum that is challenging, rigorous, and individualized to address student needs.

* Improve college preparatory program.

* Increase teacher dialog about spiraling curriculum, lesson design, learning walls, and literacy.

* Provide guidance to prepare students for college readiness by using goal setting and post secondary plans of every student.

* Increase student numbers receiving commended performance on 2007- 2008 TAKS.

* Increase number of students taking PSAT test.

* Increase student numbers and student achievement on SAT and ACT.

* Increase student participation in Academic UIL.

 High School:

a.     All teachers will be teaching the TEKS on a daily basis.

b.    Spot checks of teacher’s lesson plans will be asked for by the principal to ensure TEKS instruction.

c.     Continual walk thrus will be conducted by the principal to monitor class instruction and effectiveness.

d.    All students will be taking college readiness tests.

e.     Distance learning classes will be supported through direct contact with Howard College.

f.      UIL student participation will be encouraged by each sponsor.

g.    Using Blooms research students will be taught at a higher level of thinking which will increase student performance on TAKS.

h.    Math Renaissance will be taught in the content master lab.

i.      A new media center has been added to the library.

j.      A new science lab has been created to more efficiently meet science needs of Junction students.

k.    A new math lab has been added to help provide additional support for those students who have been determined in need of additional TAKS math support.

l.      Many classes have White boards or other technological advances to help students learn at higher levels.

 Middle School:

JMS will implement curriculum that is challenging, rigorous and individualized by teacher staff development for pre-AP course work, implement programs that are data driven to give student success and provide opportunities for use of technology in the classroom to continue to improve.

 Elementary:

Vocabulary/writing committee, math committee, and technology committee meet monthly to identify and implement researched based strategies, across grade levels, to improve student achievement.

B.    Teachers:

* Provide Staff Development that fosters a professional working environment.

* Build Professional Learning Communities that learn together.

* Provide new teacher institute.

 High School:

a.     Teachers will be trained in staff development throughout the year on an as needed basis.

Elementary:

Grade level team planning times and specified time during staff meetings for each grade level to share ideas.

C.    Assessment:

* Ensure frequent analysis of assessment data to drive instruction.

* Continue to make decisions based on data analysis and leadership team discussions.

* Monitor what is important.  Mandate accountability for students and faculty.

High School:

a.     Teachers/Counselor/Principal will study bench mark results to determine student strengths and weaknesses.

b.    Benchmarks will be given on a regular basis (at least once per six weeks).

c.     Reward both teachers and students when TAKS objectives are achieved.

Elementary:

TAKS data analysis provided on line and benchmark results analyzed to provide individualized instruction.

Goal#4  Finance

* Provide the necessary financial resources for the support of the instructional program through prudent management and financial responsibility.

* Ensure all expenses are cost-effective and appropriately accounted for and within the approved budget.

* Monitor student absences.

* Prioritize large budget expenses.

* Continue to keep the Board informed on all matters pertaining to the expenditure of the District funds.

High School:

a.     The CIC will study the budget and monies will be allocated to teachers according to student/teacher needs.

b.    Student absences are monitored on a daily basis and phone calls will be made to those students who are absent.

c.     Parent notes are required within two days of a students’ last absence.

d.    Warning letters will be sent to those students who are at risk of violating the compulsory attendance laws.

e.     Parents and students will be taken to court for excessive absences.

f.      The budget will be carefully analyzed to ensure proper and accurate spending by all staff.

g.    Preplanning for large items will be properly placed according to the district guidelines.

Middle School:

JMS CIC will prioritize budget expenditures to enhance the varied instructional programs.

Goal# 5  Community and Parent Involvement

* Increase the number of people responding to surveys.

* Encourage volunteer participation on all campuses through community organizations and PTO.

* Increase parent participation: host student showcase nights.

* Increase direct effective communication between school and parent.

* Support a mutual respect between families and school.

* Continue to expand Parent Connection so that parents have timely online access to data and information in order to increase collaboration and communication between parents and school district.

* Improve public support and confidence in schools.

 High School:

a.     An open house was held September 25, 2007.

b.    A PTO is being considered for JHS.

c.     Letters of encouragement or other personal attempts will be made by each teacher at least 3 times per semester per student to contact parents.

d.    Teachers will use Grade Speed and keep all record keeping current.

e.     Parents will be able to access their student’s grades and assignments through Grade Speed.

f.      The JISD web site will be maintained and kept current by all JHS faculty.

g.    Continue to support an Open Door Policy that welcomes parents and community leaders to school.

h.    Partnerships will be developed with local businesses to promote student successes and teacher incentives.

i.      Parent evenings will be held once a semester to discuss current and relevant student centered issues.

Middle School:

JMS continues to strive to improve parent and community involvement by implementing a parent contact initiative.  We will organize a request for volunteers during Open House and plan activities using these volunteers to help implement and reach our goals for JMS.

 Elementary:

Campus parental involvement committee that is organizing opportunities for parents to become better informed and more engaged in their child’s education.  Activities include parent showcase nights, reading nights,Spanish sessions at Meet the Teacher nights and information sessions on GradeSpeed, Saxon phonics and TAKS.
